We absolutely love the products at Grapes & Olives on tap. The flavorful olive oils and balsamic vinegars elevate every recipe with ease. They have a large variety of flavors so the possibilities are endless.

We use one of the Grapes & Olives on tap oils anytime a recipe calls for olive oil.

Welcome to Hey Kids! Let's Eat...

This is a place for everyone. If you are just starting to venture into the kitchen all or are a veteran cook looking for new ideas and recipes, you will find tutorials and inspiration here.

I started this journey as a way to teach my kids how to cook the foods they grew up eating as well as discovering new foods on their own.

I have two goals for this venture; first, if you are new to cooking, I want to provide you with some tips and tricks that will make the learning process easier and the end-result better.  Second, if you are an experienced cook, I want to give you ideas for improving, or enhancing, your skills.  I may also be able to provide you with some new ideas that will raise your finished product to new levels.

I started my cooking journey by helping my mother in the kitchen when I was 10 (that’s over 40 years ago).  In high school, I was hired as a cook at a Japanese restaurant where I learned food prep techniques (knife skills) that are still beneficial to this day. In addition, I learned how food could be art as well as nourishment.  I also gained an appreciation for exploring the cultural differences, and similarities, of food.  That appreciation has remained with me for decades and I still love exploring cultures through food and travel.  You will see that in the wide cultural variety of recipes on this site.

Food is a source of nourishment, an art form (expressed through all of the senses), an educational method for learning about cultures, history, and people, a method of gathering people around a common table, and just plain fun.

One of the most important things I will relay about the recipes on this site is that they are not authentic.  I hate using that term and I think there are very few truly authentic recipes around.  For instance, I have seen several variations of “Authentic” dishes, but they all have something a little different.  Which one is the original, or authentic?  It’s hard to tell and it really doesn’t matter.  Families differ in what they like, ingredients vary based on region, quantities vary because grandma never measured, but in the end, you cook the dish the way you like it.  If I want beans in my chili, I will put them in.  I know there are a few million Texans who will say it is not authentic Texas chili and I am okay with that.  I started with something I like, Texas chili, and made it something I like even more, Texas chili with beans. The key is to make food your family enjoys and will ask for again.

So are the recipes on this site original?  The answer is, “no”, but they have all been altered to meet the tastes of my family and friends.  Some of the recipes are handed down from my mother, grandmother, aunts, and uncles.  Other recipes are a result of researching and combining recipes based on my family’s tastes.  For instance, the Steak Churrasco is a family favorite and was adapted from about three different versions I found through research.  I then added a few ingredients I know my kids like as well as took a few out I know they would not like.  You should do the same.

I hope you enjoy the journey and our recipes / videos.
